Sosua and Cabarete reside side by side on the North Side of the island, and are just east of the city of Puerto Plata. They are both known for their large expat communities and beautiful beaches. It is quite possible to live in either town and never need to learn the Spanish language, as the American, Canadian, British and Russian communities here are huge. Cabarete is the mecca of kite surfing in the Caribbean and has a bustling night life with many beach bars and discos.
